After the phone call from Mrs Smith next door, I raced home but the only thing waiting on the front porch for me was her handbag. The contents spilled out down the steps and across the pavement.

When is this going to stop? I wish she would realise that the answer isn’t at the bottom of a bottle. Maybe then she would see how much of a royal fuck up she is, and how much she is damaging her family.

I’ve tried so hard to help her before but somehow, she always manages to fall right back off the wagon as soon as she’s released from rehab. Sometimes, while she’s still there.

Six longs years I have been taking care of her, putting up with her abuse and wishing my gran was here to ease the burden. I’m selfish, I know. But people don’t understand how difficult she can be. And the only person who could ever get through to her is gone forever.

The front door is ajar, and as I enter, the tired old house is eerily silent. I take a step. And then another, already knowing exactly what awaits me. Just like every other night that she’s tried to break into the neighbour’s house thinking it was ours, she’ll be passed out on the sofa with whatever her choice of poison is tonight. Rum being her current favourite.

And I’m right. Well, all except for the type of booze. Oh good, her new best friend is vodka. She groans, maintaining a vice like grip on the neck of the bottle even in slumber.

Shit. I was so worried when I got the phone call, I didn’t say goodbye to Paige. She’s so beautiful when she sleeps. I couldn’t bear to wake her up and have her worry too. Besides, what exactly am I supposed to say?

Oh, by the way. You know how I always make excuses for you to never come to my house. Yeah, well that’s because my mum is an abusive alcohol who hates me. She’d never look at me the same. Instead of love reflecting back at me, all I would see every time I look into eyes, is pity. And I don’t want that.

I should have left her a note or something. Anything that would make it clear to her how much of an emergency this is. But I didn’t, I ran like the coward I am and if I don’t make this right, she’ll never forgive me. I’ll send her a text message after I’ve dealt with this mess. Hopefully that will make up for leaving her after the best night of my entire life.

Wrapping a hand around the cold glass, I try to pry it gently from her clutches, but it’s no use. The dragon has been disturbed and I am right in her line of fire.

“What the fuck do you think you’re doing?” She snarls, snatching the bottle away from me and taking a gulp. “This is mine.”

“Mum, I think you’ve had enough.” I plead, “don’t you?”

“Fuck off Tyler.
